Easier relation property setup

Relation properties make your databases even more powerful, helping you build workflows — like knowing which tasks are associated with certain projects.

Before, adding a relation always created two properties: one on each database. But you don’t always need the extra property. Now, you have the choice:

  • One property (default): Add items from Database B to Database A, without creating another property on Database B. Backlinks are added to the related pages on Database B to make navigation easy, without adding clutter.

  • Two properties (optional): After you add a relation, click the “Show on the other database” toggle to create another property on Database B, so you can see a list of related pages displayed on both databases.

Whether you’re creating a new relation or editing an existing one, it’s much easier to configure and visualize your relations to perfectly fit your workflow.

Bug fixes & improvements

  • For new API features & improvements, go to developers.notion.com/changelog →

  • When you use the “Move to” function, a new pop-up appears at the bottom of your screen with options to undo, or visit the page that you moved the item to

  • Fixed a bug that prevented some users from being able to scroll in the “Settings & members” menu

  • Fixed a bug that caused some typing lag for some users when using the Return/Enter and Delete keys on large pages

  • Fixed a bug that caused database templates to be displayed as options when adding a relation property

Link previews for Figma, Dropbox & more

Bring files from Figma, Dropbox, Zoom & Microsoft into Notion

View files, designs, and meeting details, right inside Notion. Just paste a link from Figma, Dropbox, Zoom, Microsoft Sharepoint & OneDrive to create a link preview!

  • Include your design team’s latest mocks from Figma right inside your meeting notes

  • See fully interactive previews of CSVs, GIFs, MP3s & more from your Dropbox

  • The status & meeting ID of Zoom meetings update automatically in the link preview

  • Host your images in Microsoft OneDrive or Sharepoint, then paste the link in any Notion doc to see a full preview

When you create a link preview, it will be visible to anyone who has access to that page. If there are folks on your team who don't have access to these tools, link previews are a great way to bring more visibility to this work.

Notion 2.16, now with faster databases

If you think of Notion like a kitchen, our engineers are constantly cooking up new features. But kitchens get messy! So we spent the past couple weeks deep cleaning: fixing bugs, optimizing performance, and polishing some rough edges — using your feedback to help us prioritize.

The result? Now your Notion workspace is faster, easier to navigate, and has a few new mini-features too. Read on to learn more:

Large databases load 2.5× faster

When you’re working with hundreds or thousands of docs or tasks, databases help you keep everything organized. But in the past, Notion’s servers would try to load the entire database all at once, making giant databases quite slow.

Now, your databases only load what you need, when you need it. As a result, large databases are more than twice as fast as before — and this improvement is even more noticeable on databases with over 1,000 rows.

Export filtered database views

Databases can store huge quantities of content — and filters help you find what you need. But before, it was impossible to export a database without including all of its content, even if a filter was applied.

Now, you can export your filtered database views as PDF, HTML & CSV. Just click the ••• at the top right of your app, select Export, and choose “Current view” for the “Include databases” option.

Wrap individual columns

In your Table view databases, some cells can start to overflow with content — especially text & URL properties. You may want to “wrap” the cells to see all this content at a glance, or turn off wrapping to hide the overflowing content. But before, this option could only be applied to the entire database.

Now, you can customize text wrapping for each individual column. Just click on the column header, and you’ll see a new toggle to “Wrap column.”

It’s easy to link to a Notion page. But what if you wanted to point to a specific part of the page? Just click the ⋮⋮ to the left of any block, then Copy link to block to copy the URL to your clipboard.

Now when you paste the link to a specific block in a Notion page, you’ll see a Mention block option that creates a dynamic inline link to that content.

Hover your cursor to see long titles that got cut off

If your page titles or database property values are quite long, they’ll probably get cut off when you try to view them in various parts of the app. Now there are tooltips to see the full names of:

  • Menu items in some dropdown menus for quick filters, select & multi-select values

  • Related pages with long titles when you hover over relation property values when you’re in page view

  • Database property titles when you hover your cursor over column headings in Table view

Bug fixes & improvements

  • For new API features & improvements, go to developers.notion.com/changelog →

  • You can now double click column resizers in Table view databases to automatically resize columns to fit the content inside

  • Relative dates such as “today” or “within the past month” are now available within quick filters, and no longer require an advanced filter

  • If you create an empty row in a Table view database by accident, you can press the Esc key to automatically delete the empty row

  • When you attach multiple images to a comment, the images will now be collapsed to take up less room

  • The slash command menu is more difficult to trigger on accident — it no longer appears in the middle of a number such as 12/09/1968, and the menu is dismissed after four non-aligning characters are typed, or after a space (unless at the beginning of a block)

  • Cleaned up the slash command menu to show more accurate results

  • Fixed a bug that prevented toggle headers from showing up correctly in the slash command menu when using heading keywords

  • Fixed a bug that prevented /turninto commands from showing the expected options in the slash command menu

  • Now a small pop-up appears at the bottom of your screen whenever you move an item to the Trash, with a button to Undo

  • Code blocks where the language is set to Mermaid no longer show an error message when there’s no code to render

  • Code blocks on public Notion pages now include a Copy button to copy everything from the code block to your clipboard

  • Fixed a bug that caused the “+” and “⋮⋮” icons to appear when hovering over blocks on public pages when “Allow comments” was enabled

  • Fixed a bug that prevented some users from adding comments to blocks on public pages even if “Allow comments” was enabled

  • Fixed a bug that prevented Excel files from importing

  • Fixed a bug that prevented content inside Synced Blocks from being included in PDF exports

  • Fixed a bug that prevented simple table row height, column width, and background colors from being reflected in exports

  • Fixed a bug that prevented simple table rows and columns from supporting background colors if the “Header row” or “Header column” option was enabled

  • Fixed a bug that prevented simple table columns from being able to revert back to a default background after a background color was applied

  • Fixed a bug that prevented background colors from applying to the “Load x more” row in Table view databases nested within callout or quote blocks

  • To declutter your pages, the “Calculate” placeholder button is now hidden by default on inline Table database views until you hover your cursor

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the number 0 from appearing correctly in number filters

  • Fixed a bug that caused the “Load 50 more” button to appear on Table view databases with less than 50 rows

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the title field from being automatically focused after clicking the + New button on databases with a row limit applied

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the keyboard shortcut for opening/closing all toggles on a page from working correctly on database pages opened in peek view

  • Fixed a bug that prevented using the Return / Enter key inside a title to insert the remaining text as the first block in an empty page

  • Fixed a bug that prevented another to-do block from being created after hitting Return / Enter at the end of a to-do block if it had an empty child block nested beneath

  • Fixed a bug that caused a white flicker after uploading a cover image

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the hardware “back” button from working on some external mice

  • Fixed a bug that caused the date picker to show dates one day late in certain time zones

  • Fixed a bug that allowed times with a 24 hour format to be inputted in dates with 12 hour formatting applied

  • Fixed a bug that caused the iOS app to crash for some users when adding an additional account

  • Removed the ✏️ icon on rollup values on mobile since it was blocking the content inside

Notion 2.15, now with better databases

Databases are central to building custom workflows in Notion — from sprint planning, to company-wide meeting notes, to tracking work and life goals.

Now your databases are easier to use, easier to customize, and more powerful than ever before.

Quick filters

  • Filters are easier to use. Limit the items you see in a database view, quickly and easily. Filters that used to require 8+ clicks to create can now be applied in just 2-3 clicks.

  • Filters and sorts don’t affect others until you save. Make changes to your team’s shared database views without disrupting anyone else. Click the Save for everyone button to apply your changes for everyone on your team or Reset to discard changes.

  • Advanced filters enable complex workflows. There when you need them, and out of sight when you don’t. Create nested filter groups up to three layers deep for endless possibilities.

Create views from existing databases

  • Create custom views to the same database across multiple pages. You’ll see a new option to select a data source whenever you add a new view, allowing you to embed custom synced copies of existing databases in your workspace.

  • Copy an existing view, instantly. After you select a data source, you’ll see a new menu containing all the existing views of that database. Hover on each to preview, then pick one to instantly recreate the view’s filters, sorts, grouping, property visibility & more.

  • Show content from multiple databases within a single view block. For example, one tab could display a view of your “Projects” database, while another pulls in data from a more granular “Tasks” database, unifying workflows that depend on multiple databases together.

Streamlined new design

  • Discover and switch views with tabs. Views let you and your team slice and dice data however you need. And now they’re just one click away — access different views with tabs at the top of each database.

  • Customize database views from a single menu. Before, view options were spread across multiple menus and dropdowns. Now they’re all accessible from one place, where you can change the view layout, visible properties, filters & sorts, grouping and more.

  • Hide the database title. Whether you’re creating a personal dashboard with a minimalist look, or trying to clean up your team’s homepage, now you have the option to hide the title of the source database in a linked view. A top feature request!

Deeply nested sub-pages load 50% faster

Notion supports an infinite hierarchy — that means you can store pages inside pages, inside pages, inside pages, forever. But we noticed that for pages that are nested more than a few levels deep, your experience becomes more sluggish.

Thanks to a few under-the-hood improvements, these pages now load and save over 50% faster. 57%, to be exact!

Bug fixes & improvements

  • For new API features & improvements, go to developers.notion.com/changelog →

  • When your All updates feed includes both read & unread notifications, you’ll see a new Archive read option that only archives the notifications you’ve already read, keeping your unread notifications for later

  • When a comment contains nothing but emojis, the emojis are now supersized 🍟

  • Fixed a bug that prevented properties and simple table rows & columns from being draggable on mobile

Connect your tools with the API 🧰

Yesterday, thousands of folks from around the world came together at our second annual conference, Block by Block 2022! We announced new features and programs, and learned from amazing speakers like Martha Stewart and Ira Glass.

Better Databases with quick filters, the redesigned Teams sidebar, and Synced Databases will be released in the coming weeks and months — stay tuned. To learn more about what you can start using today, read on:

The API is out of beta

Since we launched the API into beta last year, over 30,000 people have joined our developer community, building everything from workflow automations and content publishing systems, to productivity tools and search aggregators, all on the Notion platform.

And for the last several months, we’ve been working hard to expand the API’s capabilities to make it even easier to build with Notion. Now the API is out of beta, and better than ever.

  • New Integration Gallery: Discover powerful integrations built by Notion and by our partners, learn more about what they do, and add them to your workspace, all in one place. Check it out at notion.com/integrations.

  • New API functionality and improved documentation: The API now supports even more block types, including synced blocks, multi-column pages, simple tables and more. We’ve also made the API more stable and reliable, and improved our documentation to make it easier for developers to build and test integrations.

  • New controls for admins (Enterprise Plan): Admins on an Enterprise Plan can now pre-approve specific integrations for use in their workspace, for more transparency and control. Admins can also view which integrations are being used in their workspace, who’s using them, and disconnect integrations for specific users.

Better dark mode

Your Notion workspace is like a cozy living room, a place to hang out and get work done — and dark mode is like turning off the lights. It gives your space a different look and feel, and can be helpful with eye strain and readability too.

Now dark mode is even better! We updated the color palette to include deeper hues, higher contrast, and more saturated colors, keeping accessibility in mind throughout the redesign. To turn on dark mode in your workspace, go to Settings & membersMy notifications & settingsAppearance.

New database permissions 🔒

Can Edit Content permission level

Notion databases give you and your teammates a customizable place to track engineering sprints, company OKRs, content calendars and more. And now you have even more control over who can do what in a database.

The new “Can Edit Content” permission level prevents accidental edits to the database’s structure — views, filters, property names, property types & more — while still allowing your colleagues to edit the content inside the database pages. Just open the Share menu of a database to get started.

Embed content from Hex & Deepnote

Using Notion to keep your data team organized? Now you can embed collaborative SQL and Python notebooks directly in your notes & docs in Notion. Just type /hex or /deepnote to get started.

Bug fixes & improvements

  • For new API features & improvements, go to developers.notion.com/changelog →

  • Notion’s new editor with multi-block text selection has now been rolled out to 100% of devices (Firefox is not supported)

  • The current block type is now indicated with a checkmark in the “Turn into” menu

  • Fixed some bugs that prevented copy/paste from working correctly with the new text editor in some instances

  • Fixed a bug that caused scrolling to select text to be very slow on some iOS devices

  • Fixed a bug that prevented custom page icons from displaying correctly on some Android devices

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the “Open on start” setting from working correctly for some users

Better text editing & copy/paste ⌨️

Select text across multiple blocks

We finally did it. Notion’s text editor has been completely retooled to combine the flexibility of “blocks” with the familiar feeling of a traditional word processor. Here’s what that means for you:

  • On desktop: Click & drag to select, cut, copy & paste partial text across paragraphs, bullet lists, callouts & more — without having to select each block in its entirety.

  • On mobile: Now you can select or copy/paste multiple items at once! Double tap to select text, and drag your selection to include content across multiple blocks.

Partial text selection across blocks will be supported on all platforms except Firefox. We’re actively working with the Mozilla team to enable this feature in Firefox as soon as possible.

Quickly jump to the next/previous item in your databases, using the new 🔼 and 🔽 buttons at the top left of the pop-up window. You no longer need to dismiss the pop-up and select another database item one at a time.

Customize which page opens first when you launch Notion

When you first launch your Notion app, do you prefer it always open to the page at the very top of your sidebar? Or would you rather see your most recently visited page? Now you can set your preference in Settings & membersMy notifications & settingsOpen on start.

Bug fixes & improvements

  • For new API features & improvements, go to developers.notion.com/changelog →

  • Duplicated items are now appended with automatically incrementing numbers instead of “Copy of” (e.g. when a page named “Meeting note” is duplicated, the duplicate will be named “Meeting note (1)” instead of “Copy of Meeting note”)

  • Blocks that point to a URL, such as web bookmark blocks & link previews, now include two distinct options in the block menu: Copy link to block and Copy link to original

  • Settings & members has a new section, My notifications & settings, making it easier to configure all your account preferences in one place

  • Deleting, restoring, and permanently deleting items now creates an event in “All updates”

Hack week 👩🏼‍💻👨🏿‍💻🧑🏽‍💻

Hey, you! Thanks for supporting Notion this year.

For our last update of 2021, the team spent a week shipping these li’l mini-features and bug fixes — we hope they make your workspace a cozier spot to hang out in the new year.

Stay tuned for lots of exciting new ways to use Notion in 2022 ✌️

Toggles for H1, H2 & H3 headers

We know that toggles are a lot of folks’ favorite Notion feature. If you’ve ever thought “I wish toggles could be bigger,” you’re in luck! Here are a few ways you can add header toggles to your pages:

  • Open the block menu by typing / or clicking the + button that appears to the left of your paragraph, then select Toggle heading 1/2/3 in the dropdown menu that appears

  • Type > in an empty heading block, or # / ## / ### in an empty toggle block

  • Use the Turn into command by clicking the ⋮⋮ block handle to the left of any block, or use a slash command such as /turnintotoggleh1

Add background colors to simple table rows & columns

We’ve been keeping an eye on your feedback since launching simple tables last month! One of the biggest requests was the ability to make simple tables more colorful. Now you’ll find a new Color menu when you click the column & row handles, giving you another way to organize your content.

Create flowcharts & diagrams in code blocks

Create flowcharts, pie charts, user journey diagrams and more with Mermaid, right inside a code block. No need to screenshot or embed charts from other tools! Mermaid syntax is easy to learn, even if you don’t usually write code.

Just select Mermaid in the language dropdown at the top left of any code block to get started. Once you’ve written your code, use the second dropdown at the top left to see a live Preview of your chart, or select Split to see your code and chart together.

Create page columns on iPad & Android tablets

In the past, multi-column layouts could only be created on desktop. Now, you can create multi-column page layouts on iPad & Android tablets too.

Just hover your cursor over any block and grab the ⋮⋮ block handle that appears (or tap and hold a block if you don’t have a mouse or trackpad), then drag to the far left or far right side of your screen.

Better rollups

Rollups are one of Notion’s most powerful features, allowing you to bring in specific pieces of information from your databases into other workflows. Now, interacting with rollups is even easier.

  • Rollups of URL, email & phone number properties are now clickable

  • Hover your cursor over any rollup and click the ✏️ button to configure the rollup’s relation, property & calculation

Bug fixes & improvements

  • It’s much easier to find the emoji you’re looking for as inline emojis or page icons (e.g. only the “bubble tea” keyword found the 🧋 emoji before, but now “boba” works too)

  • Smart quotes & apostrophes are now supported

  • Clicking on a page’s title in the breadcrumbs at the top left of the page now scrolls you to the top of the page

  • Recursive page mentions are now supported (i.e. mentions of pages whose titles contain links to other pages whose titles contain links to other pages now include all of the associated links within the mention 🪆)

  • The keyboard shortcuts for dark mode and transforming block type are now supported on iPad and Android tablets with an external keyboard

  • Checkbox properties can now be resized to perfectly fit the little checkbox in your Table view databases

  • Newly created linked databases now reflect the sort, column order & column visibility of the first Table view of the source database

  • Long titles now wrap onto new lines on Gallery view cards, and the + New button is smaller when it’s the only item in a row

  • Double click column separators in your simple tables to automatically resize the column based on the longest cell

  • Databases with three or more views now include a search box within the view switcher dropdown menu

  • When you change a database property’s visibility to “Hide when empty,” new properties added to the database will default to “Hide when empty”

  • You can paste the same content into multiple selected cells simultaneously in Table view databases

  • On mobile, you can now re-order columns in Table view databases, properties on database pages, and columns & rows in simple tables

  • Numeric values in Table view databases now use tabular lining for better readability

  • The dropdown menu that appears when you click the ⋮⋮ block handle of a sub-page now includes a button to Open in new tab

  • The pop-up that appears when hovering your cursor over hyperlinked text now includes an Edit button for easier link editing

  • Invoices for your Notion subscription are now more detailed and easier to read

  • In the Members section of Settings & members, you can now sort the member list by name or access level by clicking the User and Access level column headings

  • The dropdown menu that appears when you start to @mention a teammate now prioritizes internal employees who use your team’s email domain

  • Workspace admins now have an ADMIN badge next to their names in Settings & membersMembersGroups

  • When you’re logged into multiple accounts and navigate to a URL that your active account doesn’t have access to, Notion will now automatically switch to your other account that has access

  • Mentions to pages that you don’t have access to are now titled “No access” instead of “Untitled”

  • Fixed a bug that prevented previews from appearing in the page history tool for pages where the Move to function had been used

  • The order of page properties is retained in PDF exports

  • Sorts on a database view are retained in PDF exports

  • Cyrillic characters are now supported in exported file names

  • Inline links to Notion pages become links in exported PDFs

  • Large pages are less likely to result in an error message during a PDF export

  • File blocks become links in the exported PDF

  • The Confluence importer tool is better at determining whether a Confluence table column should become a Checkbox property in Notion

  • More date formats are supported when inputting dates as mentions or database properties, especially in Korean

  • Lots of interface fixes in the Korean & Japanese apps: button and menu item names that were too long, broken padding and spacing, miscellaneous rough edges

  • Fixed a bug that prevented the Ctrl / + \ keyboard shortcut for opening and closing the sidebar from working correctly on Japanese keyboards

  • In the page history tool, date timestamps now use relative formatting (e.g. “1 day ago” instead of “12/20/2021,” or “February 1, 2022” instead of “2/1/2022”)
